What’s funny about this is that the folks in Alabama treat this song like something that is calling them winners. Very ironic to see the true meaning.
merlin:
Deacon Blues - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Re the chorus:
They’ve got a name for the winners in the world.
I want a name when I lose.
They call Alabama, “The Crimson Tide”
Call me, “Deacon Blues.”
In 2006, Fagen told Rolling Stone:
Walter and I had been working on that song at a house in Malibu. I played him that line, and he said, “You mean it’s like, ‘They call these cracker assholes this grandiose name like the Crimson Tide, and I’m this loser, so they call me this other grandiose name, Deacon Blues?’ ” And I said, “Yeah!” He said, “Cool! Let’s finish it!”

Contrary to my previous post about MacHeist, I went ahead and participated. I got to thinking about the MacHeist model and I could start seeing why a developer would participate. The MacHeist program is a good way to get your app into the hands of potential users that may not otherwise buy the app for the full purchase price. In my case, I was thinking about buying Espresso for the PHP development I do and was always wanting to play around with Acorn to do some graphics work for the websites we maintain. To have the opportunity to get both of them was a home run for me. I now have two great apps and the developers have gained a user that is more likely to buy upgrades when future versions come along.
The main points of contention that I had around a developer being “ripped-off” for their app all but vanished when I thought about license volume. I realized that the volume of licenses that the developers are selling during MacHeist for a fraction of the price most likely brings in more money than they would see through normal sales in the same timeframe. The concerns I had about increased support all but disappeared when I bought the bundle and after a few weeks realized that I only use about 10-20% of the apps that were included in the bundle. So a majority of the developers that participated sold a license to me and have zero increased user support costs. Not too shabby.

A friend of mine on Facebook, who happens to be a vocal Democrat, today posted a comment saying that Fox News is now no longer relevant. This was said because now that a Democrat is the president, there is no place for the “conservative” media source. This struck a nerve with me.
Using this same logic, that would mean that CNN, MSNBC, NBC, ABC, and CBS were not relevant during the last 8 years because they are viewed as the “liberal” media. That also screams of someone that doesn’t believe in hearing all sides of a story to determine where they stand on an issue. Reporters, because of their human nature, will always report with a bias. It’s just human nature to let your personal history/perception affect your interpretation of events. We all do it. That’s the fun of talking to multiple people about what happened at an event…everyone saw or noticed something different. In the same vein, a wise person will watch/read as many different perspectives as they can to understand a news story to help them determine where they stand with regard to the story. It would be foolish to trust a single news source for all your news because you’re going to be jaded with that news source’s bias (individual or collective).
So my response is that it would be hard for a new source to become no longer relevant unless there ceases being news. And last time I checked, we just got a new president so there’s bound to be plenty of opportunity for news.

Why not call them resolutions like the rest of the civilized world?
Well, it’s that time of the year to think about the time I wasted in 2008 and to look forward to a new year full of promise. I don’t like to think about resolutions because resolutions seem so temporal for just the year. It’s like saying that these are the things I’m going to do for 2009 and already look forward to 2010 so I can stop doing them. I’m looking to do some changes that will hopefully last for many years to come…hence the term action plan (what can I say, I’m an IT guy and it’s a term I hear a lot). Also, as my loving wife has pointed out to me on numerous occasions, I need a target/due date to get things done.
This list will likely be edited through the end of 2008 so I’ll try to note when I add items.
The list
- Train for a 5k run in the fall
- Take the Sun Certified Java Programmer test (I’ve studied for this thing 2 times but never took it)
- Stop biting my nails and fingers. This is gross, juvenile and is a bad example for the boys so it needs to stop.
- Buy a smoker and learn how to use it. Be ready to smoke a turkey breast by Thanksgiving.
- Follow the Bible reading plan for 2009 that our church has put together (asburyonline.org).
- Read 4 books (I know this is small but I need to get into the habit of reading instead of watching TV)
- Post at least monthly to this blog.
- Order only water when eating out. Soda/tea is a HUGE money sink and is extremely unhealthy.
- Take fly fishing lessons
- Spend quality time with the boys.
- Give my wife time away from the boys. She needs it and deserves it.

Webnesia is a word I use to describe when I’ve forgotten what I was doing due to being distracted by content on the web. This happens a lot when I’m going to look something up online and something else catches my attention and, by the time I finish with that item, I’ve forgotten what I was originally going to look up.
Update: Just discovered that this is already in the Urban Dictionary (along with some downright creepy words).

This weekend I picked up a used 1TB Time Capsule for our home network. Not having configured one of these in the past, I went through my normal wireless access point (WAP) process of writing down all the network information including SSID, WPA key, etc. When I connected to the Time Capsule for the first time, it asked me if I wanted to replace a WAP on my network. I selected my old WAP and it imported all the pertinent information, including the SSID and WPA settings. I don’t know why I’m surprised by this, but every time I use an Apple designed piece of hardware and/or software the amount of attention devoted to the customer experience impresses me.
Another in the long line of great experiences with Apple designed products. It all started with a 30 GB iPod photo and it continues on today.
