Action plan for 2009

Why not call them resolutions like the rest of the civilized world?

Well, it’s that time of the year to think about the time I wasted in 2008 and to look forward to a new year full of promise. I don’t like to think about resolutions because resolutions seem so temporal for just the year. It’s like saying that these are the things I’m going to do for 2009 and already look forward to 2010 so I can stop doing them. I’m looking to do some changes that will hopefully last for many years to come…hence the term action plan (what can I say, I’m an IT guy and it’s a term I hear a lot). Also, as my loving wife has pointed out to me on numerous occasions, I need a target/due date to get things done. This list will likely be edited through the end of 2008 so I’ll try to note when I add items.

The list

  1. Train for a 5k run in the fall
  2. Take the Sun Certified Java Programmer test (I’ve studied for this thing 2 times but never took it)
  3. Stop biting my nails and fingers. This is gross, juvenile and is a bad example for the boys so it needs to stop.
  4. Buy a smoker and learn how to use it. Be ready to smoke a turkey breast by Thanksgiving.
  5. Follow the Bible reading plan for 2009 that our church has put together (asburyonline.org).
  6. Read 4 books (I know this is small but I need to get into the habit of reading instead of watching TV)
  7. Post at least monthly to this blog.
  8. Order only water when eating out. Soda/tea is a HUGE money sink and is extremely unhealthy.
  9. Take fly fishing lessons
  10. Spend quality time with the boys.
  11. Give my wife time away from the boys. She needs it and deserves it.
